After a year of publishing peeks into creative projects and randomness from our life on Instagram I've finally took a leap and put a homepage together. The past year from August 2015 until now was filled to the brim with new projects, like really brand new stuff (again, it's all up on Instagram). It involved illustration commisions, creating indie magazines, laying them out, illustrating and publishing, diving deeper into the print world and getting to work a bit more as illustrator and graphic designer.

Yes, I've been crafting too, and woodworking, and continuing to have my woodworking class at a local school with younger pupils.

Late summer I got to participate in trade fairs coming up this autumn. And that's been a trigger to finally pull to put it all nicely in line. We created a label: WERKLERAY. A label offering special items in small editions. Using hand printing techniques. Sewing a lot of linen, making use of recycled fabric too. Creating stationery to print locally in Finland on eco-friendly paper.

Here's the new homepage.
The whole range of our products is available here in shop !

I thank all the readers who came here to take a look, get inspired and share. Our adventure takes its next step, on the bespoken homepage, and of course the DIY part is coming with us to live happy ever after there too. I have a new category "DIY tutorials" which is getting filled with step-by-steps, printables, tipps and tricks and such. Another category on the homepage is entitled BLOG: same old, same old, but different angle: more illustration, more curated layout, and the overall look is just new and fresh. We grew out of the blogspot and move into a bigger house ! There's lot of "renovation" to be done, or should I better say "creation", because we're making it almost from scratch (thanks to wordpress templates for "almost").

I have been sharing way too many different projects here which all evolved. This morning I browsed through it clicking back in time and could hardly believe all that's been done, thought of, shared and revisited on the blogspot. Time to close this virtual book, to say thanks and be grateful for what I learned along the way, not to forget it and sometimes come back and flip through it because it all contributed to what we are now: we are WERKLERAY now, and very happy to be, and eager to get the best out of it. Please come with us ! Time to start a new book.

Thank you all and cheers to the blogspot and WERKLERAY!
I'm not every so often here on the blog last couple of months, that's just a matter of time, and I'm working on getting more regular on schedule.

As long as I'm not, here's the way to fill the gap - go check my brand new INSTAGRAM feed.

See in the right side bar the "I'm instagramming now" with the new button VIEW ON INSTAGRAM below the aforementioned title? That's it!

I'm since about a week into it, and seriously in love, AND seemingly addicted. It's been quite awhile since I've been thinking about it, as of an outlet about documenting the daily life. The time is right to start, since my ramblings are numerous, and they do not quite fit into what this blog is about.

You'll see there's lot of stuff happening around while I'm not blogging - my INSTAGRAM feed is going to be about gardening, woodworking for other purposes than blog, sewing, knitting, randomness, peaks into creative processes and such. I'll be happy if you come over, comment and follow it, I keep it up to date daily.

See you on the INSTAGRAM!WERKLERAYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14424409072761651186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912089994364152218.post-9454383923527453342015-07-26T15:09:00.001+03:002015-07-26T20:23:34.195+03:00Nursery gift - elephant stuffed toyHei there! Here's another occasion of making a welcome-baby gift for a friend.

We just got back home this week, after A MONTH being on what is normally called holidays. And that was fun-n-tough - like seeing all the family here and there, and endless talking and cooking together, and finding new inspirations, but also driving-flying-taking multiple trains-combos across half Europe with two small kids every ten days. Dealing with them being over-excited, over-tired, rude, screaming, not sleeping, eating candies, - like that's not your kids anymore. You certainly know what I mean - big, long family vacations, because a month like this is LONG. Happy time, exhausting time. Period. Now let's move on and get back to normal life.

So what is going on here? Remember, I told once, after I've made this elephant, that it was fun and I was thinking about making more of them?

That's it - a bit bigger, slightly different shape which is still simple but more adjusted. Stuffing a toy makes significant distortions of the flat shape, and this time I've tried to account for that. Still not quite perfect, on my opinion, so this elephant got some extra adjustment hand made seams here and there and a bit of photoshopping too, but less than the first one, so we're making progress here, hurray!

This time there's less patchworking, but more different fabric qualities, and some vintage finds as well - like this crocheted piece of a napkin. I have a small collection of them, which I have been hoarded since awhile. I'm glad they finally come in handy. There are embroided hot pink cotton, and fine alpaca wool, and fabrics from Liberty, Petit Pan, Marimekko, some corduroy, and fluffy organic cotton for ears, and linen, of course.

Stay tuned for other elephants, I hope this one is not going to be the last one.
Let's move on with babyshower gift making – part #2.

Yesterday I was talking about making
gifts for a babyshower to the theme Noah's Ark. Here's the second gift.
First I had the wooden Ark, but it didn't get filled, though I spent some
thought on it. Here's the point - filling the Ark with animals
didn't feel right. But we had to have animals to correlate with the
theme. And so they come. On a blankie.

This project involved some
collaboration with kids. We made monoprints. I simply suggested they should make a drawing of an animal they like and want to draw,
but then repeat it, because Noah's Ark had them paired. And that's what I got: a pair of fish,
birds, sheep, giraffes, toucans, and unicorns. I had six kids
working on this project, aged five to eight, and we got twelve
drawings.

I could have found eight participants,
to make sixteen prints and perfectly fill the surface of sixteen
squares. Some Photoshop rendering prior to getting started with kids
to better visualise and find the right colors to mix proved quickly
that sixteen prints would make our blankie look busy and too
patchwork-y. A bit boring too. I introduced first simple squares of
solid cottons, matching the colours of monoprints, and after some
fine tuning and playing around how to complete the monoprints better
I've come up with those waves and playing elements on cords.

That sea element, referring to
a story of Noah, the greyish blue wave repeating at four squares holds the whole piece pretty well together, and bundles it. And this element induced the idea of making pockets. Playing pockets.

I filled two of them – I had a
leftover monoprint of a fish, so I made a soft a bit stuffed mini toy
(some padding added inbetween two layers of fabric – between linen backside and
printed surface). I had to sew an Ark, to thematically tie the
blankie to the wooden Ark. And it's attached to a cord, and can be
played with as well.

Yes, there was also some research on
Noah's Ark quilts, mostly on Pinterest, though less gainful than for
the wooden Ark. I've seen one, that had colored squares and white
animals in appliqué technique, cut of white plain fabric, and hand
applied onto the quilt. Pretty subdued in colors, with only different
animals and I quess it wasn't even brandmarked as a Noah's Ark quilt,
it was a simple animal themed quilt. But I loved the idea of colored
squares and white objects.

A couple of words on colours: we don't
know whether the baby is going to be a boy or a girl, because the
future mom-to-be doesn't want to know. They love blue, different
types of cold blue, and emeraud green, and they have a bit of red and
this soft pink around the house. That's where the color scheme came
from. Not a typical one for me, but as I said after playing around in
Photoshop, I've found the satisfying combination, both with „their“
colors and the way I loved it personally to engage and produce it. I
must say, I love this piece very much, and I hope it will bring joy

Recently I had a babyshower in my
place for three of our friends-soon-to-be-moms. We made ONE common
celebration for three of them on one day, because they are going to
have their babies in summer, and many of us are making holidays
sooner or later, not all at the same time, so finding three different
dates for moms, and friends, AND making three planning lines AND crafting would otherwise be
tricky, if not impossible.

Yes, we had different themes but they
worked well with each other. As to me I was in charge of crafting a
part of gifts and particularly to ONE theme – Noah's Ark.

I've seen one interesting wooden Ark on Pinterest, a simplistic one, stained and with blueish patina, on
wheels. That gave a kick of inspiration like yes, I could give it a
try.

Truth to be told, the more I thought the more I realised,
just copying woud be boring, but that Pinterest Ark had a nice feel, that means
we needed something same, same but different.

Re-create the feeling, but with another object, a new one - that's where the most sleepless hours have gone. Some other Pinterest models had
an opening to maybe put a bunch of animals. That was a stumbling
point for me and a lot of time was spent figuring out how to make
the body of the Ark, so that it looked like a boat, like a real boat,
all rounded, but massive and bulky in a good way. Because Noah's Ark had to be bulky.

What I came up with finally was making a sturdy boat body, not a hollow one. I put four pieces of wood, glued together, got one piece 14 x 14 cm square, and sawn the edges off so that a boat shape came out. A nice edgy rounded shape.

The upper part was inspired by another
Noah's Ark, an old german shelf in a shape of Ark, looking like an old farmstead. Yes, I did some research on Arks, I didn't expect it'd fall into my lap, and most helpful results were the old documents, found on Pinterest, like illuminated manuscript pages, old models with particular, as I said, feeling around them, old illustrations. They all had something special, like details, harmony between elements and the main shape, it's difficult to describe, I repeat, it's a feeling.

Last but not least – at some point,
almost finishing the cuts I was thinking how to fill it or not (Playmobil, Lego Duplo animals), because the simple shape of
those ones would suit the Ark the best. And that's how this Ark got a
light garland. And turned into a night stand lamp.

It's possibly a bit too bright for a
baby night stand, looking more like a boat on fire than a soft night
light. And actually my friend-soon-to-be-mom needs to find another
safer solution, because this garland is getting warm, and that's not
great. Lets say, this garland was merely for gift presentation and to give some thought/visual stimulation how to use this Ark on purpose, or leave it as nursery
deco. As to me, I would maybe try to find the weakest lighting
garland and leave one or two bulbs on it, so that it gives only some
hint of light, creating a cosy and softened light.

We're not in France, and my kids are small to recall of the fact (6 and 2 y.o) AND my husband deployed (not in France, because otherwise he'd take note. As long as he's absent I'm not watching television, and stay much less online, otherwise I would take note). Long story short - we all happily forgot it. Until yesterday a friend of mine asked me. Her daughter came for a sleep over at our place, and this project fall quickly in place - the little girl and my little girl made both those mosaic hearts as fridge magnets. I am only sharing it almost as the Mother's Day has gone over - sadly. But you can make those magnets without any special Mother's Day notion, right? Let's move!

I've spent half an hour drawing, drilling and sanding. And we spent all together half an hour choosing mosaics and putting them together - fun part. Mosaics was very free style, because it was late evening and last thing I wanted was to art direct anything. I was simply happy sitting nearby and listening to their thoughts on subject: like, "Look, I'd like to make eyes here, and a nose". "On a heart?" "Well, yes, see, it's coming out nicely, isn't it?".

Next morning I've put plaster and varnish - another quick-n-easy step, better without kids, because you have to be quick, precise, and careful. Please meet the happy magnets with candy colors!

And happy Mother's Day for those celebrating it to french calendar!
Though my internet connection is still poor, and there's no amelioration in sight (yes, believe me, though I can hardly believe myself as I'm writing those lines), and the DIY's are longer, picture heavy, and hence demand more upload time, let's take a risk!

That elephant from the previous post - he needed a card, and he got one. Here's the break down.

That's not an ordinary card, all together that's looking more like nursery deco. It's a wooden elephant, made of three parts - equal in outline, and one of three (the middle one) is cut so that there's a slot when I assembled them. In this slot we put a card.

Actually why not make a simple double folded one, with an elephant on a cover and call it a day? Too simple, right? Yep - actually this card had to give place to eight or ten inscriptions, and in a double folded one that would look messy, and nobody would probably bother writing more. Keep reading - that's fun, and great, when people take time and write more - jokes, thoughts, comments, tipps, own souvenirs, anything that's longer than two lines. Hence this card would (and I'd outline and insist while giving it for inscriptions) to take time and write. Something special. Everybody can write something special if he/she takes time, I believe.

I wanted to make a folded card - sort of dividing it all in pages, yet being all on a one piece of paper. There're fabric inlets to divide, create some visual interest, and match the stuffed toy I've made previously.

Well, back to the elephant - it's a sturdy one, my plywood was 9 mm thick, threefold it brings to 2,7 cm, slightly over 1", so it stands pretty well. This elephant wasn't initially planned. It came as an answer to the question - how to make a folded card look nicely and not fall apart without any ribbons of other closing/holding together fussiness. The elephant was the answer, made as a stand, to slip the card into and hold it perfectly.

That's all, try it out, it doesn't take long if you have some basic sawing experience, pay attention to exactly where you cut, and have some patience for sanding. Mines weren't exactly perfectly equal, so yes, I've spent one evening watching a movie and sanding - but that doesn't sound that bad, right?

I had a piece of pinkish red gingham cotton, but making a stuffed toy mostly of that fabric perfectly according to a dress, would be neither fun nor challenging. The dress was just very pretty, but classic, maybe a bit too classic, so that was also a point - to find something to shake it up, and make it a bit more edgy, add a colorful and bold touch, maybe mix in other fabrics, and create more visual and haptic interest.

That's sometimes a bumpy road I mean, if you take a risk of making a doudou (stuffed toy) by yourself - what kind of animal would please, or wouldn't, can there be any hidden associations I'd possibly overseen? Will they like colors if I choose them like I feel and mostly if I have choice, neutrals are not on the plate, except the linen.

This one is double sided, with a day side and a night, sleepy side - it let me use more different fabrics on a relatively small and compact surface. I've taken neutral and black linen, a piece of wool, corduroy and cotons and also a piece of furry plush cotton for inner surface of ears.

Here we are with the mix and how it feels like - there are soft corduroy strips, bold color accents of Marimekko flowers, cooler linen and warm wool, and very cuddly plush ears in this elephant, some appliqué (eye, feet and trunk), and embroidery - all in all it's a piece pretty rich in texture and color. I will possibly sew a couple more of them. Let's see if this new thread Stuffed toy will get any other additions.

Those bears would happily live somewhere in Andalusia. Maybe. Or maybe not. Anyway they have this tiny home (35 cm x 20 cm in floor plan) for their family soon-to-be-of-four.

I've already talked about them - as a gift for friends (who loved Andalusia a lot), which made a loooong way from the initial idea into the realisation. And I'm happy those bears have been insisting enough to stick to me and wait until I got them alive and made the house, filled with furniture, art, leisures and toys.

I really, really love them and it was hard to make them go, honestly. But I'm happy - happy they turned out like I felt they had to be, and that the house feels like home and it's just a happy and welcoming place for them.

Two days ago, as I was preparing this post for publishing for the first time, I've written a long story, with lots of me thinking, me doing, me trying, me asking, and other me's - it felt a bit over top. Now I just want to share those pictures with you and let them speak for themselves. Yes, it was a challenging, many times frustrating, very inspiring, instructive in so many ways, and finally fun process.

Look at them and enjoy. Right now I just focused on showing an overview, and bears themselves - they are pretty small - about 10 cm (4 ") as you see on a picture in my hand. Made in almost (because of felting) classic technique of teddy bear making - hand sewn, fully jointed, with needle felted muzzle, and glass eyes.

Everything in the house incl. the house itself have been DIY-projects, except of a toy train. Plywood, fabric, felt, prints, paper collage and paper napkins - more detailed posts and some tutorials are upcoming.

I'll come back and zoom on furniture and other pieces. Stay tuned!
Hey there, here's another post about
woodworking. In sad corners. I could have re-made it completely, but I thought more like of a challenge, and more of trying to develop/re-use the existing pieces.

See the first BEFORE-picture? That's
what's a sad corner means – randomly placed dispatched items, lots
of white space, not functioning with the rest, some other useful
things (world map) sloppily fixed, and generally a magnet for all kinds of clutter. Just not a happy spot to look at in a rather getting to be pulled together young girl's room - that's a sad corner. Do you have those guys in your place? I have a LOT!

So here're the consideration points:

a thrifted and still cherished cupboard
definitely too large for a re-painted BRIO toy stove;

the greenish teal of a BRIO stove not
working anymore – too dark, it makes this smallish stove look even
smaller;

world map too high and seemed to need a wooden support to live longer and not to peel off the wall every couple of days;

some plants here and there wouldn't be bad;

this wall would be a good place to display some nice treasures that don't need to be played with.

I have pinned some inspiration pictures
on one of my Pinterest boards (House living ideas), among others the original picture of
what a stove looked like – a red BRIO stove. Skip the next paragraph, or keep reading if you have a BRIO toy stove. A lot of details bummed me about this stove, and I need some more lines to make it clear. On the other hand, the imperfections of that monster made me create a nearly perfect kitchenette which my kids are happily both play with - now there's enough space on top surface and around. WITH storage.

So, dear BRIO - here we go - I guess on that
Pinterest picture, the same as at our place, and this is the general
problem of that BRIO stove – it's way too small to look good with
anything not-too-toy'ish. Try to pair it with anything else that is not a toy, like a thrifted cupboard (our situation), or other neutral shelves (you'll find many examples on Pinterest) and this stove
instantly looks tiny. Very tiny, and disproportional.

This cupboard is the smallest I've found in a
thrift shop (only 50 cm large), but it's looking huge, next to the
BRIO (only 38 cm). Another question – finishings – cheap, white
plastic, cut shorter as the main pieces, hence looking very imperfect. AND there's simply not enough space to move around, let alone the storage question.

All that being said – I took the
front piece of the bespoken stove, I like it, and off it went into creating a
larger version, integrating a DIY-sink and offering some more top space.

Other inspirations I wanted to make
work together were:

a mirror, with a frame imitation old
silver (had one, it spent six years waiting for a come back);

a box underneath it to put small
bracelets, silk butterflies, and other precious embellishements a
little soon-to-be six years old girl keeps loosing everywhere
otherwise;

a floating shelf to display some nice
paraphernalia;

cacti and/or other indoor plants.

Floating shelf has been made, a jewelry
box is another 100% DIY because of the mirror measurements. I've also bought a small cactus and a plant.

I will come back one more time and show
you the corner one more time. It's getting happier, and the new-old
BRIO stove will get a light paint soon. Stay tuned.

Lately I've been permanently talking about woodworking. Now it's time to share some peeks, right? And make a new tag here on the blog. Well let's go then!

That's a wooden house, a very simple one. Yes, I could have bought it ready-made, but I find them a bit overpriced (at least here, in Finland), and then a ready-made wouldn't quite perfectly fit the inside I was going to make (neither measurements, nor in character/appearance). It took me one year longer as expected (mostly waiting time). You'll see more of this house later, as soon as I have better pictures. It's been made of plywood, and it'll be a home for three teddy bears (stay tuned, another post is coming soon).

This is a custom order, which influenced what is inside: my friends' reading/studying preferences, their favorite leisures, arts, travel "coups de coeurs", and a such. They moved in a new house and that is going to be kinda gift for them. They moved in last year by the way, and at that time back then though I knew I'd love to realise the idea, or sort of vision I had for them - a teddy bear house, - I had no clue how to pull it all together. That's normally not bumming me, but last year as I started, I had made really, really bad pieces.

Turned out woodworking was a bit trickier to learn, and it took me some time to find out techniques, feasibilities, source out the tools, better organize my smallish work space so I'd be able to work efficiently. I put this project on hold , yep, for almost one year, that sounds crazy, as I'm writing those lines, but this year went fast.

And then came the moment last month when I knew I could make it better, faster, and actually bring to life what I had vaguely in my head. I've been working with my simple wood processing tools (a jigsaw and a router) since a couple of months, preparing my crafting class for kids, making shelves, boxes and a such for our home, it was getting more fun than frustrating/painful, and there was some sort of confidence though still a weak one that this project could finally work out, leave my head and live out there on its own.

All in all I had a carte blanche about this house. I asked a few questions about the above mentioned leisures, readings, travels, got some good responses with additional options and off it went into a very busy and fun creative research trying to make all those particulars work on a very reduced space (appr. 35 x 20 cm surface).

There're some fun things I've tried out at this project and I'm going to come back and show you more of that, with some tutorials and more details. This house is almost ready now. Come back next week to see more!

Recently I've got a punching-&-binding tool, which is rather simplistic, but I wanted to get started to make more profesionally looking albums, and was not ready to invest a lot into a more high-end device. Some details bummed me about pricier models, so I keep waiting. Anyway I got one, a reasonably priced starter model, that promised to punch thick cardboard (mine was about 2,0 strong), and it's working not bad.

This album went all crazy about colors, which happened accidentially. It was planned with many softy pinks and oranges, and some greens, and yes, vivid yellow hues for daffodils, but I got some drawings on colored paper, like hot pink or neon yellow, so I had to add more energy to the whole thing and shake it up. And as kids drawings are spontaneous, the album had to get more playful and less orchestrated as well. That's how it turned out more graffit-y, and merged, and experimental with unexpected elements. But you know what? That's normally where all the fun begins.

Anyway, the binding device did a great job - see the cover? I wish I had left the pages two days longer under heavy pressure, because I was not able to get good pics - the edges were slightly wound up (not a big deal, but tricky for photograph) - lesson to learn for the next time!
This post has been scheduled.. for
december!

We've made small angels back then in this technique and gave them to a
friend. I've cut wood and prepared the supplies, the kids have applied paints, made hearts of hama beads, salt dough ornaments, and glued all the elements. They've been in other colors in december though. And all I managed to do was squeezing a picture of them into one of „round-up“ posts. I missed the occasion to
share a tutorial before Christmas, which I repented a lot, and then it didn't fit in anymore.
Until Easter.

Making angels for Easter suddenly made sence, hence I
got out the supplies, polished the old tutorial pictures, we made a new
serie in spring colours and here we go. All the usual suspects, my
friends – wood, wooden beads, virgin wool, some decorative
elements.

Happy Easter crafting!
There's something from german Waldorf
upbringing and educational concept I'd like start with to explain
what we've been recently doing - „Jahreszeitentisch“.

That
means seasonal tables – creating of scenes following the seasons.
That's about making walks with kids, looking around and watching what
is happening in nature in each season, getting focus on what is particular,
what is intrinsic/usual/interesting throughout the year, month for month, season for season. Than
you try to re-create some of the ambiance at home captured with what you find
in nature. There are some enlargements possible, you
can replicate small scaled animals, human figures etc.

It's all about observing and learning
what is happening outside, and crafting with kids. Normally you
should find a small corner/table in your place to build the scene with those seasonal elements/materials.

We have not a table for this, maybe
later, but not now. For now we've played around to create a small
display – that's about end of the winter – clear sky, lots of
warm greys, some brownish green (moss), straw. We haven't seen
animals, but we might make another „display“ with them another time.

This display is not that deep, but
that's okay for now.

The colors are very low-key, except of
bright sky, that's the most beautiful feature of this mid-season.
There're lots of graphically interesting elements – which are
normally snow covered or melted into foliage – and then they all
pop up under soon-to-be-spring sun.

That's fascinating and making our walks
more interesting and less monotonous. We've added a little human figure there - a wooden bead, a piece of a branch and straw arms. This tiny creature (appr. 5 cm height) got a "stool", and is not fixed, we can get him out of scene and play with. My little girl has painted his face and hair. And a straw star, since that's abundant right now and gives a very beautiful golden ocher in the sun.

SIDE NOTE: that's kind of a project which is fun if there's total freedome for everybody to try out different ideas and where's no adult art-direction, or as little as possible. For me that was the hard part - to step aside and just try to stay playful and open, and not to force something that would be aesthetically pleasing (hence graphical and minimalistic) for me. My little girl has added this and that, and reinforced somewhere in-between, so we got more mass and thicket, It's been fun for her to create "a forest"and she was very happy with what we did. Keep in mind to stay open!
A couple of months ago I've made this
recipe organizer. Once a week at school the kids come together to
cook – the same as I'm volunteering to make my weekly crafting
workshop, the same two other moms make a cooking workshop. And my
little girl and some other little friends of hers attend this class. The
result are tasty treats she brings home friday afternoon, but also
LOTS of recipe pages we've accumulated over last months.

This organizer wasn't for my girl
though – there's a boy in a cooking class and his mom's making it
happen and puts lot of love and time, and work into it, so my guess was that
they may be in the same situation – LOTS of recipe pages,
beautifully prepared and hand colored by kids during pauses inbetween
cooking steps. That's how I came up with the idea of organizer.

I've taken a simple cheap organizer
from a discounter, a handful of paper napkins with „boyish“
motifs (I simply chosen something that wouldn't be flowers, or any
pink and pastel hues in my soon- to-be-huge collections of finnish
paper napkins). I had here Marimekko (fish motif), Finlayson (bears and fruit trees), and some other less
fancy home decoration brands on hand.

After it was almost finished I realized
I needed separator sheets to break down the mass of transparent page protectors I've put into the organizer, but also to easily find recipes in categories: main meal – meat and fish, side
dishes, desserts, and miscellaneous. I've cut the blanc paper to have side
flaps on the right side to write/stamp the tags: viande, poisson, legumes, etc. (in french). The napkins I've used for the organizer itself were great here,
because I could underline the content with fish, bear, fruit pictures, and
some bubble foil print in olive green imitating green peas
(vegetables).

Colors are not usual, very much not
usual. So I've made a digital collage and a tablette sketch first to see which
other colors would work well. I think it's a pretty helpful step and
though it's for me like a step-aside, which I'm not always willing to
make, and maybe I'm not going to make it each time, it's not that
bad. At least for working on projects with some „out-of-my-comfort-zone“ elements involved. They seem less intimidating
with this visualisation.

Now we need one more for my little girl. A more "girlish" one. Stay tuned!

It's actually getting usual here that almost each time there's a handmade gift, there's also a handmade card. First, that's one more reason for another simple handicraft project, and second - leftovers. Cards are just very good at recycling all the tiny scraps you won't probably sew or use anymore.

And because it's time to get back to normal blogging life, or at least start to make efforts to get more discipline, here're also a short overview of what you need for that kind of project.

Recently I've bought a roll of wood imitating adhesive film - to make over a doll's house I've bought for my little girl last year, which had good bones but the previous little owners of the house made sure walls and floor were properly covered with layers of feltpen in craziest colors. Nothing against splashes of colors, but floors in alternating pink, emeraud green, dirty orange, dark violet just to name a few all together in each and every room of the house - no, that's not beautiful, believe me. I tried to cover it with this wood imitating adhesive film, which I got cheap from a discounter. At least for floors. It worked.

Back here anyway - I had leftovers of this film. This card had to accompany "house" pillows, house are wooden here in Finland, and so wooden (imitating) this card went.

Acrylic paint worked well on this film, and then it got a bit wonky in the layout.

Here's another point of making a card by the way. Have you tried to find some fun card to welcome a new born? I mean, at least you buy everything together in one well curated shop, where the nursery items match stuffed toys AND cards, and they are NOT having bunnies, or prams, or storks, or blue/pink paper mini-onesies on them... And it's like you have a special present, so you want a special card, right? I must be trully obsessed with all things "special", perfectly matching /or mis-matching, but in a perfect way as well. That's who I am!

In a perfect world I'd be for one sunny day somewhere like in Berlin, and would go shopping in Prenzlauerberg and just be marvelling over all the cute handmade/letterprinted/smart/original cards.. And later I'd sit in a cafe outside, browsing through lifestyle and design magazines, people watching, scribbling in a notebook, and sipping my latte and starring at all the unnecessary but-oh-so-beautiful little treasures I'd have.

As long as that's nothing but imagination, I'll craft my cards myself. Why not? Try out, that's quick, and easy, and rewarding. That's addicting, you've been warned!
Am I going to confuse the readers or can they handle this?

These were the questions I've tried to answer and failed. They led me all inevitably to the question like what is this blog for me? Normally it's sort of a diary for most bloggers, so that means I should possibly just talk - about whatever happens in my life and whatever comes along, personally and/or creatively. I'm not that huge at talking about personal stuff, neither on the blog, nor in my normal life. Maybe one day I can. Maybe not. I'm fine for now with the sentence like "I make stuff". And I don't necessarily speak, nor would I possibly take my time to speak. It seems somehow pathetic to me to speak about myself or what I'm doing. Speaking is like pretending I have some valuable information/knowledge to share. Mostly I do not have. Even less while talking what my life is about. Sounds controversial for a blogger, right?

Here's one point: back in my twenties, somewhere at the beginning, I did have that urge to speak, and spoke a lot. Not only in twenties, but also at the very beginning af this blog - about parenting, creativity, resolutions, etc. And then it's gone. Talking on those topics bums me out because I feel like I'm taking myself too important and I don't like it. Blogging for me is a special form of speaking, actually made up of writing, which means like "advanced", thoughtful speaking, and teaching, and showing, and actually is pretty unintrusive - you can stick to it or leave it somewhere in the middle of the post without being rude to me.

Back to the what's the point of blogging? Surely not a diary. Too inconsistent and random. Is it a creative diary? Sometimes, or many times, and yes, more often than not, I feel like in a perfect world I'd like this blog to be more of a portfolio. But for some weird reasons it's a slippery slope and here I am, spending weeks working on something that is not fitting in. And you get no updates for months. Because I hesitate. I apologise sincerely, I do.

So please, met another one of those "outcasts" - I think I should give it a try and just talk about random creative stuff happening right now.

I had a custom order for a baby boy's nursery - blues (unusual greyish blues and ultramarine blues), light blues, and fabric with tribal pattern. I committed to make "house" pillow cases. They were easy, and simple. And a bit too "rectangular" for my style, so I ended up adding some curves by sewing a stuffed toy - a lion. This one came spontaneously, and I like how it rounds up the serie. Now all I have to do is a matching greeting card.

The pillows have inlets - "house" shaped - which will be stuffed with polyester filling and put inside the "house" pillow cases. I haven't filled them because I'll be mailing them and they need to be flat. I'm not showing you how they look like filled because filling causes distortion and that's pretty unpleasant, bulky and curvy in picture. Not in real life where they are all cuddly and bold and make a very nice statement.
A very simple one, with lots of different papers, in layers, bold and colorful.

I'm a hoarder, of MANY things - mostly paper scraps, cards, fabrics vintage and not-so-vingtage, books, coloured glass vases, old toys, candle holders, anything of paper, fabric, wood, brass. My second lets call it serious hobby was scrapbooking, a hoarder hobby par excellence, isn't it? It started fast and furious, and lasted maybe about eight months or so. That were very happy months, full of walking through papetries, day dreaming, night scrapbooking. I couldn't afford buying many fancy supplies and tons of papers, but I ended up with pretty darn amount of scrapbooking papers, most of them lost, outsourced or donated, because I made lots of wrong choices while working my way through all the options, styles, techniques in the scrapbooking world. (Side note: the first hobby has been and still is, though "on ice", drawing. But that's more artistic than handicraft, so lets not mention it for now.) The third hobby came after I had a child - sewing, enriched through painting-&-sewing, sewing in mixed technique. The fourth one - the actual one - is woodworking. Oh, there was teddy-bear-making somewhere inbetween. And lacemaking. And knitting (as far as for another side note).

But I still get excited each time I see interesting and eye-catching scrapbook works, but that doesn't happen often. Which doesn't mean I'm tempted to get back into that scrapbooking rabbit hole.

Over years I changed. I use much less patterned scrapbooking papers. Stamps - no. Embellishments - no. Fancy stickers - no. Lace ribbons, buttons, or other volume paraphernalia - no. I kept only punches and basic alphabet stamps. And ink pads. I appreciate working with papers, simple papers, that can be found everywhere, in grocery stores, on flea markets. There are for instance paper tissue packs, which are a but fussier to work with, but are great for layering technique. And much cheaper. Yes, I'm working in layers, which I keep pretty simple - paint layers. spray paint layers through old crocheted napkins, silk paper in ribbons, paper tissue, old book or old agenda pages, and some cuts made by hand with scissors. Which I make from gift wrap paper rolls I get for not much money either.

All in all pretty simple tricks, and pretty well known, if you dare, or just at some point can't help but step aside from the classical scrapbooking mainstream.

It might seem it takes more time making such a page. That's not, after you've tried it several times and know which colors you like and how they work together.

Yes, I've been thinking to get back to more "paperwork", not scrapbooking. And right now, where I'm often sawing, sanding, routing, drilling into timber, it sometimes feels good to simply grab some papers and glue, and paint, and just make something "simple", "not-that-loud" and "light". If you work almost everyday with wood as I've recently been doing, you'll know what I mean. There's something meditative, calming and soothing about working with paper.

So why have I been talking about scrapbooking? Simply to tell now that I'm happy that I've gone the way and did a lot of mediocre pages to learn, to learn to accept not to love them and continue the research, and that I took my time to found out my way. Now it takes me very little time to get started and finish a project. And not get creatively "lost". And be happy with it. As this one.

This is custom made, I've put it onto plywood and that's a part of upcoming project I've been working on in last two weeks. Yes, woodworking, but also teddy bears. Stay tuned!

Here's the appetizers: a new volunteering project I've started this year at a local school.

It's a weekly project where we get crafty with kids and create lots of fun things. Simple things. Recycled things. Natural materials and not so natural (like plastic caps), as long as they are recycled.
So that's about the crafting part. But that's not all.

Actually my concept was to pick up a tale, like each time a small short fairy tale, and create a scene, based on this tale - a background, some objects for midfield and playing objects (dolls, or animals or vehicles) for the foreground.

We have about one hour weekly and that's pretty loooong for smaller kids (8-9 y.o.) to only "craft" at a one long project. Making a "scene" lets us get crafty on a fair amount on smaller, shorter different steps that keep kids busy, and (almost) pretty well concentrated through the session.

That was in the theory. Practically we don't take tales right now, we're just creating "a situation".

Like aircraft in the sky, or field cars on a sunny day, or animals in jungle.

We normally start with making a background - like here a "jungl-ish" one. It takes all in all about up to twenty minutes. More on this in a separate post later. I'll explain more and give you more examples. That's pretty interesting, and it's well worth a post.

Then we will probably finish something from the previous session as long as the background dries nearby.

After that I'd normally ask some questions, practical questions, like: "Hey, here's what looks like a piece of wood (normally being a piece of paper). Can you imagine making a car out of this piece, with as few cuts as possible? "

After about five to ten minutes of playing and trying and cutting I'd show the samples, and we'd discuss what we shall use and find the materials in my supplies. And we craft.

That's the core business, and it takes about twenty minutes as well. Sometimes a bit longer.

If we're lucky, we'd finish five minutes before the bell rings, and we'd play around. Which is sometimes tricky, because honestly some pieces need to dry, glue needs to set and so on. In a perfect world we'd take them back the next time and play around at the very beginning. In a real world, the kids are impatient to see what comes next and what new project is awaiting.

It's new, and fresh, and not set, and it's working out a bit differently as I've expected, and it is not quite following the path - which is maybe for good. We'll see. It's lot of work, lot of fun, and very much learning by doing. I'll keep you posted on new sessions!
After a loooooong bit of silence the header of this blog got a new image - welcome what I'm going to do this year - WORK ON, tout court. "BAUSTELLE" (like "construction area" in german) is great, and "RAUMALAINEN" is too long, though I'm still feeling sentimental about it, the sound is soft and round. There're dozens of reason why I stopped for more than A MONTH! And they are so NOT worth being mentioned. What counts, is that I'm BACK. Again.

There's LOT of inspirational content, that now I can only share very very small-ish. I apologise, I'll get back to writing longer, better, more detailed posts with better photos, SOON. Just be patient with me. There are many interesting projects that I spend my time on, so if you haven't quite forgotten this blog (which you should have done - out of sight, out of heart), stay tuned.

If you are new around here, then WELCOME. The balance for me personally is now MORE work- and LESS blog-focused, and I know, I know this IS not a good shot for you, my dear readers.

That's been going on here so far, except of two holiday weeks off and out of country?

Some weird but looong pondered projects, like this linen zipper case. I have wanted to make this many years ago and stock fine little belongings for my future baby girl. Waiting for her and taking them out of that case, looking and dreaming how I'd put on her the tiny sweet garments and playing with the future newborn. The newborn is now almost six years old, besides...

I'm working on new mock-ups for my new school volunteer project, coming weekly. All recycled thrifted wood, plastic to build with kids and learn them some basic crafter skills - like an aircraft and a truck, which you see here. More on that soon with explanations, properly photoshopped pics and behind-the-scenes.

Some other stuff that happened before Christmas and that I will nevertheless write about, because those were beautiful projects (angels, mini-book, cards) and I simply have to share them with you.

Furniture remake - check on this later. Some new cards - coming up. New albums with new colours, because I'm starting dwelling in turquoise-rust orange-rose-olive green sauce. Let's shake it up with some cobalts, greys, violets, just to mention a few. Done? Yep, that's enough for teasing, right?

Hold on, my friends, and stay tuned. Welcome back!

This was a small project being part of Christmas crafting workshop I've made recently with kids. And this one was the last in a row and the most simple one - the kids only had to put snowflakes and make stars of salt dough.

I think this idea of thread covered balls has many other possibilities - as for application. Layering different kinds of materials is for example one of those. Stay tuned for more ideas!

I shall have a bigger post on salt dough coming up soon, but you already probably know the recipe, it's pretty simple and easy to find. Stay tuned for more tricks and other ideas about salt dough.

We made it with kids. If that's what you are going to do, make your own mockup first to check if your magnet can hold the weight of baked snowman, that's not as obvious as it may seem! As you see on the picture, I had some stronger magnets, I guess thinner ones won't do the job!
Let's start the HOLIDAY SEASON, shall we?

I have some fun small craft projects upcoming in December: wood scraps, fabric scraps, salt dough (NEW!!), wool - those are some basic materials. I'm going to show you how to use and create some festive cards, decorative objects and share some simple ideas to craft with your kids and spend quality time together - because that's what the coming month is about.

Here's one of three projects for this week: a REINDEER. Follow the drawings to make it - it's as simple as that!

Just one VERY important note for that kind of project about balance: you need to put ALL the decorations to the neck WHILE the glue is not dried yet, so that you can find the right balance for the reindeer turning and slightly bending his legs. You cannot make any adjustments after the glue is set, unless you break the legs and start over again. This reindeer has an IMPORTANT amount of weight on this neck, so it would tend to tilt forward unless you make some adjustments on balance.

Stay tuned for further Christmas projects this week!
The ferry from Helsinki only takes two hours to get there. And before we have stayed for like almost three weeks in Malta, on Gozo island. That's about why it took me so long to get back to the blog.

Malta took me by surprise - not only that I haven't expected it to be so different from what we've seen in Europe before. Or I should better speak of Gozo - a smaller island, with less tourist infrastructure and therefore being a bit more authentic in my opinion. I've seen too little of Malta itself to be able to judge on the whole. I ended up loving Gozo, which was unexpected, it was not a love at first sight. Probably for better. And three weeks spent there is not an argument to justify my ability to evaluate anything on this island. I had a feeling though that we have been living in Gozo for far longer than just three weeks. That's probably because of our "first-time-here", when every impression, especially a new one, which has been never experienced before (architecture, nature, cooking, way of life, new acquaintances, habits, local products, just to name a few) seems to be more intense and time passes away differently, or at least seems to. But I'm not going to speak about this today.

We didn't plan to go to Tallinn, but we were in Helsinki, just around the corner, so "why not".

Here's why we are talking here about travels - it's about what I learn about, or more precisely from countries. There's a whole lot, and there're also lots of angles a country can be interesting. My angle is and will probably remain the handicrafts. As well as spotting the structures, colors, patterns in architecture and nature that would be in my opinion "typical" and of course new from what I have known or seen before.

I got new books about Gozo lace, estonian embroidery, knitting mittens, weaving belts, some handmade memorabilia. What else? A couple of books on maltese architecture and history - that's something challenging as well since there're patterns, shapes, figures and other inspirational material that can be potentially diverted into handicraft motifs and sparkle new ideas.

I guess we missed a lot, but that's okay - I got back home with the feeling that I found some inspirational themes to keep me going in next months. I wish I could have an opportunity to also learn a bit more of the techniques staying in the country, like some weaving, and get my hands on it, or get some more insight into the meaning of estonian/baltic ornaments, or visit some more museums and have more time to look around. I'm happy with what I could find, make and learn, I'm quite happy, my friends.

What about work? Since I last posted here last month, precisely one month ago, I had like about eight productive days or so, and that's what came up and is coming up soon. I've recently made a Christmas calender - something I wanted to make since many years but got lost each time in too many ideas/techniques etc. There have been some Christmas cards as well, tutorial coming soon. Those ones came spontaneously as a side project from left-overs from the calender.

The calender is finished now and offered to a friend, and no, I do not have pictures of the result. But I'm working on another one, pretty similar, and then comes one more, and you will have more peeks, how-to's and explanations. The starting point was a vintage linen curtain I got this summer, because I loved the pattern. This calender project was the perfect match to give this curtain a new life!
Stay tuned!
I have a friend, who just turned 27 years, and shortly after actually my own anniversary back in September I've been thinking about making a list of N projects corresponding to that age of N years (thirty-five in my case), and listing those projects to be accomplished in a new coming year. Or maybe documenting the N projects we've been making/living/dreaming of/reading/messing up or working on during the past year.

I didn't have time to tackle it for myself, but the idea got stuck in my head. So that's how it got into life - now my friend is hopefully going to document the twenty-seven fun projects/ideas/whatsoever about her life and her family's life in this brand new album.

It's getting better, the album making process. It's less painful because I'm making less mistakes, and I've learned by doing them lots of useful tricks and techniques how to make it look more what I expect it to look like. Weird colors, lots of violets and that splash of vivid orange - no comments, it just happened.

And yes, the pages are matched to the cover, with same patterns, colors, sometimes a bit softer, so that they don't pop up too much, because they only need to be inviting and inspiring but not outrival the coming content.

As usual those past weeks, I don't have a tutorial for now. I will come next time with a bit more explanatory post sharing some detailed thoughts about the making-of and showing new upcoming albums. Stay tuned!
